Flipping the Script on Gel Print Image Transfers

It is true. Little changes can make the biggest differences. 

I do a lot of image transfers. Testing designs for bundles, prepping the Friday Freebie, experimenting for videos—sure, there are definitely worse jobs to have. Nonetheless, I rarely have the time to fulfill the transfers’ full creative potential. No time to build up layers, commingle stencils, do double exposures, collage, etc. I’m not sure there would be enough paint in my house (or city) to pull them all. 

Admittedly, I’ve been feeling a bit burned out. The routine of transfer, pull, photograph, repeat was a bit like the movie Groundhog Day—if the groundhog had a brayer. But one simple change has my creativity soaring again. 

What’s the secret sauce? It was a simple change in my paper. Instead of pulling the transfer with a simplistic paint or paint combo on white paper, I’ve been “jazzed up” my pulls. A video by Jackie Bernardi, “The Gel Plate Skip Rolling Technique…” (linked below), reinvigorated my creative spirit. Honestly, I only followed the video to do ANYTHING other than transfers for a few hours—but something unexpected happened. 

As I looked at each resulting paper—the shapes, the colors, the patterns—I became excited about which of my image transfer designs would look perfect on each new background. What color should I transfer with? The design? A ballerina? Forest trees? Typography? So much potential I can hardly contain myself. In two hours I produced a mountain of papers, each challenging me to find the right transfer, but as they were now all pre-made, they would not interrupt my workflow. They would only make it more colorful - full of life. Easy peasy!

If you’re getting burned out on any form of art, step back and learn something new. Even if it is a little thing, it may inspire you to flip the script as well.
